Kings Island 2026: What to Know Before You Go

Kings Island is one of the Midwest’s best amusement parks, especially if you love roller coasters. Located in Mason, Ohio, just northeast of Cincinnati, the park is known for rides like The Beast and Orion and has more wooden roller coaster track than any other amusement park in the world.
I grew up a few hours from Kings Island, and my family visited often. These days I’m based in Cleveland, about three and a half hours north, but I still make it back regularly, and now I get to experience the park with my own family.
This guide covers what’s new at Kings Island in 2026, the park’s roller coasters and other attractions, tickets and passes, dining, nearby hotels and practical tips for planning your visit.
What’s New at Kings Island for 2026?
Kings Island did not debut a new roller coaster in 2026, but there are still several noteworthy changes around the park.
- Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare: A reimagined dark ride returns to the park, paying homage to the original attraction that lived at Kings Island for a decade. Passholders got an exclusive preview on April 17, ahead of the park’s public opening day on April 18.
- Grand Carousel’s 100th Anniversary: The park’s hand-carved carousel, manufactured in 1926 and still the oldest operating ride at Kings Island, celebrates a full century in 2026.
- Revamped Passes: Six Flags, which now owns Kings Island, rolled out a new Regional Park Access system for Gold passes, giving passholders access to multiple parks in their region rather than just one.
- New & Returning Events: The season lineup includes the Food & Wine Festival, Star Spangled Night, Grand Carnivale, Halloween Haunt, and WinterFest.
Kings Island posts updates on ride status and schedule changes through its website and social media, so it’s worth checking before you go.
What Is Kings Island?
Kings Island opened in 1972 on former farmland outside Cincinnati. Its in-house design team later created The Beast, which remains the longest wooden roller coaster in the world. After operating as part of Cedar Fair for years, Kings Island became part of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation following the companies’ merger in 2024.
Kings Island includes roller coasters, family rides, live entertainment, and seasonal events, with Soak City Water Park located next door. You can cover the major rides in one full day with a solid plan, but adding a second day gives you more time for Soak City, shows, and other attractions without rushing.
Kings Island opened for the 2026 season on April 18. Daily operations began May 14, and Soak City opened on May 23.
Roller Coasters at Kings Island
Kings Island has 15 roller coasters and more wooden coaster track than any other amusement park. The Beast gets most of the attention, but the lineup includes everything from family coasters to major thrill rides like Orion, Diamondback, and Banshee.

The Beast is the ride most closely associated with Kings Island. The park’s in-house team designed and built the 7,361-foot wooden coaster, which has been winding through 35 acres of wooded terrain since 1979. It is still the longest wooden roller coaster in the world and one of the best reasons to stay at the park after dark.
Orion is the tallest and fastest coaster at Kings Island. This giga coaster features a 300-foot drop, seven airtime hills, and speeds up to 91 miles per hour, and it has been a top draw since its 2020 debut.
Other Attractions Around the Park
Kings Island is best known for its roller coasters, but there is plenty to do if not everyone in your group wants major thrills. The park is divided into several themed areas with family rides, shows, games, and attractions for younger kids.
Families with younger kids will probably spend much of their time in Planet Snoopy. The area includes rides for smaller guests, beginner-friendly coasters and opportunities to see Peanuts characters throughout the day.
Action Zone groups several of the park’s suspended and inverted thrill rides in one corner, while Rivertown centers on river-themed attractions near the park’s classic wooden coasters. International Street greets you just inside the entrance and is home to the Grand Carousel and Kings Island’s Eiffel Tower replica. You can ride the elevator to the observation deck for a view of the park and surrounding area.
Arcades, midway games, and seasonal entertainment fill in the rest of the park, with the lineup shifting depending on when you visit.
Soak City Water Park is located next to Kings Island and includes water slides, wave pools, and splash areas. Admission is included with a regular Kings Island ticket or season pass, but I would plan dedicated time for the water park instead of treating it as a quick break between roller coasters.
Tickets, Passes, and Fast Lane
Ticket prices at Kings Island move with demand, so what you pay depends on the day you visit and how early you buy. Booking your ticket online ahead of time is consistently cheaper than paying at the gate.
If you plan to visit more than once, compare the cost of a season pass with the price of your tickets and parking before buying. A pass can pay for itself quickly, but the value depends on how often you visit and which benefits you will actually use. For 2026, Six Flags overhauled its pass system across all its parks, introducing a new Regional Park Access model. Gold passes now include access to multiple parks within a defined region rather than just the park where you bought it, and passholders who bought a pass during the prior year’s Most Valuable Pass Sale retained access to all Six Flags parks for the 2026 season, with the regional system taking full effect in 2027.
Fast Lane is a paid add-on that gives you access to a separate, typically shorter line for participating rides. It does not eliminate every wait, and admission to the park is sold separately. Frequent visitors can upgrade to an All Season Fast Lane pass, which also includes access to other participating Six Flags parks, depending on the pass tier you hold.
If you’ve used Lightning Lane at Disney World, Fast Lane works on a similar idea with a simpler structure. You buy it once for the day and use it as often as you want on participating rides, rather than reserving individual return times ride by ride. Fast Lane sells out on busy days, so buy it in advance if you know you want it.
Dining at Kings Island
Kings Island has dozens of places to eat, including snack stands, quick-service counters, and sit-down restaurants. You will find plenty of standard amusement park food, but there are also several local and park-specific options worth trying.
A few standouts:
- LaRosa’s Pizzeria for Cincinnati-style pizza
- Coney Bar-B-Q for barbecue in the International Street area
- Festhaus for German-inspired comfort food in a large indoor venue
- Tower Gardens for lakeside-style dining and seasonal festival offerings
- Planet Snoopy Ice Cream for the park’s famous blue ice cream, which has been a Kings Island tradition for generations
You will also find snack stands and coffee locations scattered throughout the park.
The Kings Island mobile app can help you locate restaurants and view menus while you are inside the park, and a dining plan can be a good option for guests planning a full day at the park.
Outside Food Policy
Kings Island allows unopened water bottles and baby food through the gates, but no other outside food, beverages, or coolers. Guests with a documented medical dietary need can bring a small soft-sided cooler after checking in with guest services. Unlike some other parks, Kings Island doesn’t maintain a designated picnic area outside its front entrance.
If you pack food from home, request a re-entry ticket before leaving through the Front Gate or Soak City exit. You can eat at your vehicle and return afterward, which can help reduce food costs during a full day at the park.
Seasonal Events at Kings Island
Kings Island hosts several seasonal events throughout the year. Your experience can vary significantly depending on when you visit, especially when an event adds specialty food, entertainment, or nighttime activities.
- Food & Wine Festival (May 29–June 21, 2026): Runs weekends only, with dishes and drinks from around the world paired with live sets from Cincinnati-area bands.
- Star Spangled Night (July 4): A one-night event built around an expanded fireworks display and music honoring the Fourth of July.
- Grand Carnivale (July 18–August 2, 2026): The park’s flagship summer festival, running daily and centered on the Spectacle of Color parade, plus live music, cultural crafts, global food offerings, and a nightly finale featuring fireworks, lasers, and drones.
- Halloween Haunt (fall): Turns the park into a haunted attraction after dark, with haunted houses, scare zones, and horror-themed entertainment.
- WinterFest (winter): Closes out the year with millions of holiday lights, seasonal food, and cold-weather entertainment across the park.
Where to Stay Near Kings Island
You will find several hotels within a few minutes of Kings Island, with additional options throughout Mason and the greater Cincinnati area. Staying close to the park reduces your morning drive and makes it easier to arrive before the gates open. It can be especially useful if your ticket, pass, or hotel package includes early entry.

Tips for Visiting Kings Island
Kings Island is large enough that walking back and forth across the park can waste a surprising amount of time. A little planning can help you ride more, avoid unnecessary waits, and spend less of your day retracing your steps.
- Arrive early. Coaster lines form quickly once the gates open, so getting there early gives you a real shot at the park’s most popular rides before the wait gets long.
- Check whether your pass includes early entry. Some pass tiers let you into the park before the general public, which is worth using if popular coasters are your priority.
- Visit Tuesday through Thursday or on a Sunday for the lightest crowds. Weekends and Mondays draw the biggest lines, especially in June and July.
- Plan for ride lockers. A small waist pack or zippered pocket works on many Kings Island rides, but Banshee, Orion, and Mystic Timbers require guests to store loose items before riding. Kings Island has implemented stricter no-loose-article policies on many of its newer, faster coasters, similar to those at parks like Cedar Point. Check the current ride policies before your visit so you know when you may need a locker.
- Ride The Beast after dark. The coaster winds through 35 acres of wooded terrain, and the darkness makes it much harder to anticipate the next drop or turn. It is one of the best night rides at Kings Island and worth saving for later in the day.
- Catch the 10 p.m. fireworks and drone show from near the Front Gate. The show projects onto the Eiffel Tower and uses drones overhead, so guests near International Street get the most complete view. A few rides shut down around 9:30 p.m. to reset for the show and reopen once it ends.
- Request a re-entry ticket if you need to leave. Whether you’re grabbing food from your car or just need a break, ask for a re-entry ticket at the Front Gate or the Soak City exit before you go. Re-entry isn’t allowed after 6 p.m. during Halloween Haunt nights.
- Bring a card, not cash. Kings Island is entirely cashless. If you only have cash, Cash-to-Card kiosks throughout the park convert it for you.
- Know the weather policy. Kings Island does not issue rain checks or refunds because of weather. The park may remain open while individual rides close temporarily, so check the app for current ride status and have a few indoor attractions or shows in mind.
- Keep a light jacket in the car. Temperatures can drop fast once the sun goes down in spring and fall, and you’ll be glad to have a layer for the evening rides.
- Secure your glasses before riding. Kings Island requires eyewear to be secured on its larger coasters, so bring an adjustable strap if you wear prescription glasses or sunglasses, or plan to remove them before boarding.
- Traveling with young kids? The Family Care Center near Planet Snoopy Ice Cream has a space for nursing and diaper changes, and the Rider Swap program lets one adult ride while the other waits with a child too small for the attraction.
Plan Your Next Kings Island Visit
Kings Island is one of the best amusement parks in the country for wooden coaster fans, but there is enough variety to make it a strong choice for families and mixed-age groups, too. With a solid plan, you can experience many of the major rides in one day, although adding Soak City or a seasonal event may make a second day worthwhile.
Check the Kings Island calendar before your visit, since park hours, events, and ride availability can change throughout the season.
If you have more time, extend your trip beyond the park and spend a day exploring Cincinnati. The city’s museums, restaurants, sports venues, and riverfront make it easy to turn a Kings Island visit into a full weekend getaway.
