Cedar Point is one of the most famous amusement parks in the United States and a must-visit destination for roller coaster fans. Located on a peninsula along Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio, the park is home to one of the largest collections of roller coasters anywhere in the world.
I have been visiting Cedar Point for years and even worked there earlier in my life. That firsthand experience gave me a behind-the-scenes look at how the park operates and what can make a visit smoother. Whether you are planning your first trip or returning for another round of rides, knowing how the park works ahead of time can make a big difference.
This guide covers Cedar Point’s roller coasters, other attractions around the park, tickets and passes, where to eat, where to stay, and practical tips that can help you get the most out of your visit.
What Is Cedar Point?
Cedar Point first opened in 1870 as a lakeside resort along Lake Erie. Over time, it evolved into one of the most recognizable amusement parks in North America and a bucket-list destination for thrill seekers.
Today, the park blends record-breaking roller coasters with family rides, seasonal events, lakefront views, and several on-site resorts. Many visitors plan multi-day trips so they can ride the major attractions while still enjoying the beach and the surrounding Sandusky area.
The park typically opens for the main summer season in early May. For the 2026 season, Cedar Point opens on May 9, 2026.

Roller Coasters at Cedar Point
Cedar Point has long been known as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World, and coaster enthusiasts travel from across the country to experience the park’s lineup.
Major thrill coasters include:
• Millennium Force
• Steel Vengeance
• Maverick
• Magnum XL-200
• Valravn
• GateKeeper
• Rougarou
• Raptor
• Gemini
• Blue Streak
• Corkscrew
Family and intermediate coasters include:
• Iron Dragon
• Cedar Creek Mine Ride
• Wild Mouse
Two of the most talked-about coasters in the park right now are Top Thrill 2 and Siren’s Curse.
Top Thrill 2 rebuilt the former Top Thrill Dragster into the world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch “strata” coaster. Riders experience three powerful launches, including a reverse launch reaching more than 100 mph before climbing the 420-foot top hat tower.
Siren’s Curse adds a completely different type of thrill ride to the park. This tilt coaster climbs 160 feet before stopping on a section of track that tilts downward, locking into place before the train drops into the rest of the ride. The coaster also features onboard audio and LED lighting effects.
Altogether, Cedar Point operates 18 roller coasters, which remains one of the highest totals among all amusement parks.
Other Attractions Around the Park
While roller coasters are the main draw, Cedar Point includes a wide variety of rides, shows, and entertainment spread throughout the park.
Families with younger kids often spend time in Camp Snoopy and Kiddy Kingdom, which feature rides designed for smaller riders and first-time coaster experiences.
The Boardwalk area along Lake Erie combines rides, restaurants, and waterfront views. It is also where some seasonal entertainment takes place during the summer.
You will also find classic rides, arcades, games, and live entertainment throughout the park, depending on the time of year.
Next door to the main park is Cedar Point Shores, a separate water park with slides, wave pools, and splash areas.
Tickets, Season Passes, and Fast Lane
Cedar Point uses dynamic pricing for admission, so ticket prices vary by day and by how far in advance you purchase them.
Buying tickets online ahead of your visit is typically cheaper than purchasing them at the gate.
Season passes are popular for guests who plan to visit multiple times throughout the year. Different pass levels offer perks like parking, discounts, drink plans, and early park entry.
For 2026, the Gold Pass also includes expanded regional access to several Six Flags parks across the Midwest and Canada, allowing visitors to visit multiple parks with one pass.
Six Flags has also confirmed that 2026 season passes and memberships will continue to be honored through the 2026 season, including multi-park access for eligible passes.
Fast Lane passes are another optional add-on. These allow riders to skip the regular lines for many of the park’s most popular attractions, which can make a big difference during busy summer weekends.
Dining at Cedar Point

Dining at Cedar Point
Cedar Point has dozens of food stands, quick-service restaurants, and sit-down dining options spread throughout the park.
Some popular spots include:
- BackBeatQue for barbecue
- Farmhouse Kitchen & Grill for comfort food
- Hugo’s Italian Kitchen for pizza and pasta
- Chickie’s & Pete’s for seafood and casual dining
You will also find snack stands, ice cream shops, and coffee locations throughout the park.
There is even a Starbucks inside Cedar Point, which many guests stop at early in the day or later in the evening. The Starbucks locations are also receiving refreshed seating and décor updates for the 2026 season.
The Cedar Point mobile app can also help you locate restaurants and view menus while you are inside the park.
Outside Food Policy
Cedar Point generally does not allow outside food or beverages in the park except in certain situations, such as baby food or specific dietary needs.
However, there is a picnic area located just outside the park’s front entrance. Some visitors bring a cooler and step outside the park to eat lunch before returning, which can help save money during a long day at the park.
Halloweekends
One of Cedar Point’s most popular seasonal events is Halloweekends, which typically runs on select fall dates.
During Halloweekends, the park features haunted houses, scare zones, themed shows, and special seasonal foods. The event offers family-friendly activities during the day and scarier attractions later at night.
For the 2026 season, Halloweekends will run from September 17th through November 1st.
Other Seasonal Events
Cedar Point hosts several seasonal events throughout the year that can shape the kind of trip you have.
The Star-Spangled Celebration takes place around the Fourth of July and includes fireworks, live music, and special entertainment.
Barrels & Bites is a newer early summer event that replaces the former Frontier Festival. Held along the Frontier Trail on select dates in June, it focuses on specialty food-and-drink pairings, including beer, bourbon, and wine, as well as live music and a more laid-back evening feel.
Boardwalk Nights returns in summer evenings from July 17 through August 16, featuring entertainment, games, and themed food around the Boardwalk area of the park.
In the fall, the park also hosts the Happy Friar’s Fresh-Cut Fries Fest, a limited-time event celebrating one of Cedar Point’s most iconic foods.

Tips for Visiting Cedar Point
Cedar Point is a large park, and a little planning can make your day go much more smoothly. These tips can help you ride more coasters, avoid common frustrations, and make the most of your time.
- Arrive early: Getting to the park before opening gives you a chance to ride popular coasters before the longest lines build.
- Take advantage of early entry: If you are staying at an official Cedar Point resort or have the right pass, early entry can give you a head start on some of the park’s most popular rides.
- Start toward the back of the park: Many visitors stop at the first rides they see near the entrance. Walking deeper into the park early can help you reach major rides before lines build.
- Pack light for the rides: Many Cedar Point coasters are easier to manage when you are carrying as little as possible. Zipper pockets or a very small waist pack can save time and reduce locker hassles.
- Use the mobile app: The Cedar Point app shows wait times, ride closures, and nearby dining options so you can adjust your plans throughout the day.
- Ride during dinner hours: Lines for some major attractions often move faster when other guests leave rides to eat.
- Build in a midday break: The hottest and most crowded part of the day can wear you down quickly. Taking a break can help you enjoy the evening hours when crowds often thin out.
- Save a few headliners for night rides: Coasters like Millennium Force, Maverick, and Steel Vengeance can feel completely different after dark.
- Consider sharing a dining plan: If your group eats at different times, one all-day dining plan can sometimes work for two people who do not mind sharing meals.
- Keep a light jacket in the car: Weather along Lake Erie can change quickly, especially in spring and fall. Having an extra layer in your car can be helpful for cooler evenings.
- Use a strap for glasses or sunglasses: High-speed coasters and lakefront winds can easily knock loose eyewear off your face.
- Meta glasses are allowed on some rides: Cedar Point now allows guests to wear Meta smart glasses on rides if they are secured with a strap, though other recording devices like GoPros are still prohibited.
